New Roundabout and Rehabilitation of the Alija Izetbegović Bridge in Donji Vakuf

Design of a Roundabout with Retaining Structure and Rehabilitation and Widening of the Alija Izetbegović Bridge in Donji Vakuf

Completed project

Through the optimization of the initial design, a highly functional and economical layout was achieved, significantly reducing geotechnical risks by cutting the required hillside excavation volume threefold, where the current height of the retaining structure reaches approximately 23 meters. Additionally, the project includes the complete rehabilitation of the Alija Izetbegović Bridge, incorporating structural column reinforcements and a significant widening of the superstructure in its first span to seamlessly enable the connection to the new roundabout. The newly developed non-standard layout converts the bottleneck into a safe, four-way intersection featuring an oblong dual-centered roundabout. The design incorporates a 6.80-meter-wide circulatory roadway, customized approach lanes for heavy vehicles, and an efficient closed stormwater drainage system discharging into the Vrbas River.
